Insurance Settlements: Why you probably should not accept the first offer
January 13, 2025Hearing loss can be a normal part of aging, but for some people, their job can cause it – and it can be a frustrating experience.
If you or someone you love struggles to hear the TV, follow conversations or it is hard to get their attention when you are speaking, they might be suffering from hearing loss.
And depending on their job, it could be caused by a work-related incident.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 25 percent of all workers have been exposed to hazardous noise – with 22 million exposed in the last year. And of those numbers, 53 percent of workers reported not wearing hearing protective gear.
In general, workers should not be exposed to noise louder than 85 decibels in an 8-hour shift, according to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. That means that if you need to raise your voice to speak to someone less than three feet away, it’s likely too loud.
Certain jobs are more apt to cause issues with hearing loss, including those in the:
- Public Safety Sector, such as Firefighters
- Aviation sector
- Construction sector
- Lawn maintenance sector
- Manufacturing
Some warning signs include:
- Ringing in your ear
- Having to shout at coworkers
- Temporary hearing loss
There are measures you can take to limit hearing loss and damage, including wearing earplugs or headphones (your employer should provide them) and your employer can also take steps to dampen or reduce noise.
If your hearing loss is due to the conditions of your job or workplace, you might be eligible for Workers’ Compensation benefits. As with most workplace related illnesses, injuries or conditions, the first step is to file a claim and keep track of your records.
